«This is not just a trade agreement, but our hope to lift Africa out of poverty,” said WAMKELE MENE, the Secretary General of the AfCFTA, at the virtual launch ceremony.
Since January 1, 2021, African countries have officially started trading under the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which represents a market of 1.2 billion consumers, and a combined GDP of about US$3 trillion for the 54 member states of the African Union.
This free trade area is seen as an opportunity to accelerate countries’ industrialization and economic integration, supported by plausible openings to capital and consumer markets.
However, whatever the solid foundations of AfCFTA’s objectives, they will remain out of reach if African businesses are not able to take full advantage of the trade and investment opportunities offered by the zone.
Considering an international scene where countries are organizing themselves into zones: NAFTA in North America representing ±26% of the world BIP, or the RCEP in Asia representing 30% of the world GDP; considering that these zones are organizing themselves by taking measures that encourage the integration of value chains within the region, eliminating the complex and fragmented trade rules that have prevailed until now, in order to stimulate the economic dynamics in the region.
It is clear that to make the implementation of AfCFTA effective, development actors must inevitably participate in the integration and industrialization process expected by the zone.
This background suggests the need for member states to take imperative measures to promote Africa’s own content in the context of the implementation of the African continental free trade area, hence the general theme of the Pro Meet Up and Learn 2022 Conference: IMPLEMENTATION of AfCFTA: THE IMPERATIVE NEED FOR PROMOTION OF CONTINENTAL CONTENT.
